Welcome! My name is Aubrey Hamzeh.
Before having the experience of sitting in meditation, the practice can be illusive. When I was young the word, meditation, conjured images of sorcery and levitation. My first experience meditating was in a high school world religions class. It was really just sitting. I did feel a little different after though. In my early 20's, I stumbled upon a yoga studio that offered donation meditation gatherings. Sitting in meditation calmed me in way I had not experienced previously. Anxiety and stressful thoughts became malleable, thus inner conflict and ambiguity were manageable and less scary.
Now after hours of yoga teacher training and study, meditation is an essential part of my life, for which I am so grateful. I still periodically attend meditation gatherings, and I lead online meditation meetings in addition to maintaining an intimate personal practice.
There is something magical about meditating alongside others. My teacher, Libby Cox, often quotes Gopal Aiyer Sundaramoorthy: "You will always become the company you keep, so keep great company." Meditation influences the internal dialogue within our minds, and meditating with others allows for proximity to those who also take time to watch their inner voices.
While I periodically meditate in the company of others, taking time to really discuss meditation with others does not happen often. Hence the creation of this website and blog, where I plan to publish interviews with people who meditate. I hope these interviews lead to further conversations about meditation out in the world and encourage others to find meditation practices that help guide them through different phases of life.
